Oh, the Irony...
Well, this blog is officially resurrected. It went on hiatus due to my deciding not to join the AF after all. Things happen, y'know? So I went across the hall to the Navy recruiting office and on Dec. 4th, I swore into the USN. I will document all the details when I have more free time/free internet access. But for now, all I'll say is this- WHY?!! Why are they getting rid of the all-black enlisted winter uniform?? It was my favouritest of all the Navy uniforms... :( It looks sharp, it is stylin', and the new khaki/black combo looks like the Marines on a bad day, or the RIC. Neither of which works... >ish not happy!< So yeah. As I said, more intelligent thoughts later. Just had to get that pet-peeve out. I no sooner join the service than they get rid of their coolest uniform. >sob<

First Post!
Hello, and welcome to my blog! As I don't have a readership yet, I am making this introductory post with a view to the random browser of blogger who might click on this blog without the intention to spam, and rather with curiosity about my title which, at present, is the only interesting thing about this blog.
'Stand By To Start Engines' is one of two very funny collections of short stories by Rear Adm. Daniel V. Gallery. I appropriated the title mostly because all the cool things I could come up with at 23.20 were already taken. I highly recommend 'Stand By To Start Engines' and the companion piece 'Now- Hear This!' Rear Admiral Gallery is one of my personal heroes.
Then, one might reasonably assume that I am planning on going into the Navy and have constructed this blog as a means of keeping all dear friends/family appraised of the situation.
This is not the case, and honestly that might be a bit might to read into the previous two paragraphs, but I'm sure someone out there could manage it. Um. Anyway.
The purpose of this blog is to chronicle my progress in my attempt to join the USAF.
So why do I want to be a zoomie and not a sailor? Well, for one, my ex-boyfriend is in the Navy. Not a very frequently used reason, but it does have some slight bearing on my decision. Also, the AF seems to have cooler toys, better housing, and let's be honest, cooler uniforms. "Good humor man in summer" and "Waffen SS in winter" are not my ideal everyday work clothes. (Though actually the Waffen SS bit isn't quite so bad... The Germans did have _style_ in WWII)
Granted, the new AF dress blues are kind of blah looking, but I'll deal with it.
And no, I'm not picking my branch of the service based solely on looks. I'm also picking it on marginally easier PT scores. And, to facilitate my training and improving my mile time, I will sign off now and leave all further updates to a later date and time.
Until then, CAVU.
